Linda Gates is the Head of Voice in the Department of Theatre at Northwestern University School of Communication. She trained in acting, voice and speech at Carnegie Mellon University, receiving her B.A. in Acting from San Francisco State University where she worked with Jules Irving and Herbert Blau, Artistic Directors of The Actors Workshop of San Francisco which she joined after graduation. She received an M.A. from New York University. She has taught voice and speech at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia University, Yale School of Drama, Central School of Speech and Drama in England, Circle in the Square Theatre School, The British American Drama Academy’s Midsummer in Oxford program and The Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Hamburg, Germany. She was also a guest director and visiting professor at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a voice and dialect coach both on and off-Broadway, in Chicago, regional theatre, opera and in film.
Her recent Chicago theatre vocal coaching credits include: Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The Goodman Theatre, Northlight, Marriott Lincolnshire, Apple Tree, The Court Theatre, Remy Bumppo, Writers Theatre, About Face and Lookingglass Theatre Company.
Her recent opera credits include The Metropolitan Opera where she coached Placido Domingo in the world premiere of The First Emperor, Julie Taymor’s English-language production of The Magic Flute and Béatrice et Bénédict at Chicago Opera Theatre as well as the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Among her regional theatre credits are Milwaukee Rep, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, the Long Wharf Theatre, and the Lost Colony. She was also resident company vocal coach for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the American Shakespeare Theatre and the Yale Repertory Theatre.
Professor Gates has conducted vocal workshops for the Royal Shakespeare Company, VASTA, ATHE, and for the Pan European Voice Conferences in Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. In l999 she helped establish a joint M.A. in Theatre Voice between Northwestern University Department of Theatre and the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, UK. Her book Voice for Performance is published by Applause Books.
