Franca Sofia Barchiesi


FrancaSofiaFranca Sofia Barchiesi most recently created the role of Bemadette, the German-born novelist in Nilo Cruz’s newest play, “Sotto Voce” (Theatre for the New City, MDCA and Arca Images). She also appeared ​in two ​of Nilo’s previous plays: Ofelina in “A Park in our House” (NY Theatre Workshop and McCarter Theater) and Ramona in “Dancing on Her Knees” (Public Theater). Other roles include: Ana in “The Clean House” by Sarah Ruhl (Yale Rep, Woolly Mammoth in DC, Ensemble Theatre in CA), Clara in “House of the Spirits” by Caridad Svitch (Denver Theatre Center), Queen Mary in Schiller’s “Mary, Queen of Scots,” the iconic artist Georgia O’Keeffe in “Blue Plains” (Miranda Theatre), the Italian actress Anna Magnani in “Roman Nights” (DR2 New York & New End, London), Arkadina in “The Sea Gull” (American Globe Theatre) and as Oliva in “Mariela in the Desert” (Denver Theatre Center). She appeared in the dual role of Bella/Eleanor in “Big Love” by Charles L. Mee (Dallas Theatre Center), and as Pola in Michel Wallerstiein’s “Five Women Waiting” (Manhattan Theatre Source). She is an alumni of Circle-in-the-Square and was invited by Nikos Psacharopoulos to join in his Williamstown Theatre Festival productions following graduation.  In 2006, she received the Helen Hayes Award; in 2010, she was nominated for the Denver Post Ovation Award for “House of the Spirits,” and in film, she won the IFP Excellence in Film Acting award for Lady in “Heat and Silence.”  Other film roles include: the Russian poetess Anna Akmahtova in “Hope Against Hope” for Canadian television, Ella in Janice Deaner’s “Henry & Ella,” Judy in “Lana’s Allure” for German television. She was also the narrator for two PBS documentaries: “Visions over Italy.”
